Dr Leslie David Payne was a distinguished medical scientist, dentist, and expert in blast biophysics, ballistic and penetrating injuries, stab wounds, and unarmed combat. From the early 1970s, he served as Ballistic and Blast Archivist at the Royal Army Medical College, alongside running his dental practice. He advised military, medical, police and security services in the UK and US, often working discreetly behind the scenes.

Leslie played a central role in establishing the Diploma in the Medical Care of Catastrophes and rescued an important collection of rare medical publications following the closure of the Royal Army Medical College in 1999. His extensive archive supported generations of clinicians, scientists and researchers.

Leslie died peacefully on 24 May 2018, leaving a lasting legacy in military medicine and trauma research.
