The Course

The history of medicines and the pharmacy profession is woven into London's past. Next March, why not look behind the counter and immerse yourself in our short course exploring the history of pharmacy? The fascinating collections held by an array of museums and historical institutions provide a glimpse into centuries of healing, trading, and learning.

Learning Objectives:

• Explore the wide-ranging pharmacy history organisations, collections and exhibitions in London
• Increase your understanding of pharmacy history, with particular emphasis on the development of the profession in England through its key institutions and individuals
• Deepen your appreciation of pharmacy history's surviving material culture in museums, libraries, botanic gardens, archives, and the built environment.

Led by Briony Hudson in collaboration with the British Society for the History of Pharmacy, this 3-day course offers an unrivalled opportunity to delve into the capital's pharmacy history alongside expert guides. With a programme that includes behind-the-scenes store tours, private visits to key organisations, and curator-led discussions, join us as we dispense London's lesser-known medicinal stories.

• Royal College of Physicians Museum
• German Historical Institute (a chance to view the former Royal Pharmaceutical Society's headquarters from 1841 to 1971)
• Science Museum Medicine Galleries 
• Economic Botany Collection, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew

3-day and single day combination tickets are available for your desired dose of learning

Due to capacity we are limited to just 20 places per day. Participants can select to attend the full three days; a combination of two days; or a single day of their choice. 

Please note: Lunches and refreshments are not included in your ticket. We will signpost on-site cafe's and nearby vendors, or you are welcome to bring your own lunch on the day(s) you are attending.
